CONTINUING violence against infants, girls and women are being reported on a daily basis makes me feel that India is suffering from female-hatred mania. In the last couple of months cases of rapes and assault have made it to the headlines with alarming frequency. In another shameful incidence, on March 18, under Meera Road police station in Mumbai, a father was arrested for allegedly raping his two daughters on the advice of a ‘tantrik’ in an attempt to become rich for ten years. Shocking enough is the fact that mother was also a part of the crime. He first raped his elder daughter, now 23-year when she was just ten years old and continued for ten years. According to the sources, father was advised to get sexually involved with his daughter for 133 times to become rich. The hunger for money led the couple assault their kid. They continued the crime with the younger daughter till she complaint of it to her maternal uncle. According to the police sources, the couple was arrested on the complaint of the relative.
Crime, sex and women

Rape is the fastest growing crime in India today; as many as 18 women are assaulted in some form or the other every hour across India. Analytically, the chronology compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals that crimes against women seems to be more deadly than terror attacks in India. According to the report of the NCRB 2007, a total of 185,312 incidents of crime against women were reported in the country during 2007 as compared to 164,765 during 2006, an increase of 12.5 percent. Of this, 85,312 incidents of crime against women and 20,771 cases of rape, 38,734 molestation and 1095 sexual harassment were reported in the country in 2007.

In more than 90 percent of the cases, the victims knew the offenders. The highest number of rape cases was reported from Madhya Pradesh, 75,930 women became victims of torture and cruelty by their husbands and in-laws. Every three minutes a woman becomes victim of a crime somewhere in India. The highest number become targets of their husbands and in-laws, says the report. Further, the number of crimes committed against women has increased continuously during the last five years.

Cases of Crimes have upsurged in thousands, a decade back in 1999, a total of 1, 35,771 cases were reported. Over 32000 murders, 19,000 rapes, 7500 dowry deaths and 36500 molestation cases are the violent crimes reported in India in 2006 against women. While Madhya Pradesh is worst off among the states, the national capital New Delhi continues to hold on to its reputation of being the most unsafe city in India. Delhi takes the top slot for crimes ranging from murders and rapes to dowry deaths and abductions. For instance while the national crime rate declined negligibly by .02 % in 2006; Delhi’s rate grew to 357.2more than double the national average of 167.7.

It reflects country’s law and order situation is plunging deep into chaos. While its capital, New Delhi remains a cauldron of crime, instead of leading the way in tackling crime, Delhi seems to be doing worse year after year. The skyrocketing rise of crimes against women and children makes me wonder why the country India cannot tackle effectively. Is there any solution? Everyone is against it, but nobody knows how to answer to it. Of there is no magical solution to it, but definitely there is a need for fundamental changes to be made in our society. The authority whether it’s state or central government or the politic administration, it must be sensitive to this social menace. India cannot be graveyard of policy failures. Make violence against women no-no in our society.

Great article...

It would be difficult to bring a positive change to such crimes till the time basic mindset of people remains same. And this includes both men and women. As in most of the cases we have seen that some or the other woman supporting such crime.

Similar is the case with the mothers of the culprits in maximum cases. Because the rapist is her son, she feels its not a big deal if a girl is being raped.

People need to learn how to behave with other human being. We need to teach basic moral education to people at our home starting with children.

Thanks Sanwali,

It’s essential that if we are to live in a civilised society, people must cultivate a sense of morality and human dignity. It’s a fact that laws alone with not help fight this social threat, unless and until, we make our home a temple of human dignity.

This shows how our country is progressing in crimes. It is quite natural when politicians and their children themselves are criminals how can we expect others to be without crime mindset. All know Lalu's sons were involved in eve-teasing. Moral education has almost been neglected and money and liquor is easily available and also enjoys protection from police and others being friends and relatives of high and mighty. If at all good behavior is to be enforced moral education must be enforced first.

Are politicians and law enforcement sleeping?? Now its coming down to our children’s, 7 year old being molested by teacher are our School SAFE???

Media has a lot of responsibility not only to give the new but also ask the LAW Makers what action is taken??? What new laws are being created to protect our Mother, wife, daughter’s and sisters???

All rape cases are not reported to police but if you consider only reported cases, a woman is raped in india every 29th minute. This shows the gravity of the problem. Laws are not very strict for such type of violence against woman. Few years back, there was a move on government part to award capital punishment in such cases bit it did not materialised. Sad part of the story is that in most of the cases culprits are either close relatives, friends or known persons.

I am personally against capital punishment. But there is a more fundamental reason against it. Do you really believe that it will stop or even lesson crime? Actually, even in states that have capital punishment for various crimes there is no mitigation of any crimes. There seems to be a common sense concept that capital punishment will solve any particular crime. Common sense also said that the world was flat.

Dictators and the US have been using capital punishment to solve many issues. It never works.

The real Terror War is against Women and it is not going to be solved by a patriarchal society ever. As long as men fundamentally rule, that is not just the head of state but the entire superstructure, women will be assaulted, burned and exploited.

But something must/should be done with people like Rohan running around loose.

Also notice how seemingly otherwise reasonable guys are so easily swayed by his garbage.

Yea, Rohan truly hates women. His time would be better spent fighting for gay rights.

The most heineous and severe punishment deserving crime against women is throwing strong acids like sulphuric acid on the face of the girls or women.

I think I know why the sudden rise in crime against women and children. It seems to happen when economies get bad. When men start to feel powerless they take it out on the weakest people they can find. If I didn’t have such a headache, I would look up stock market trends around the world then the crimes against women stats and compare. The only obstacle I can foresee is that most countries have not kept the kind of detailed records of violence against women that would be needed for the comparison. You know, some countries view rape as a property crime and others punish the victim so there are no accurate records.

In the daily cases of abuse, the lower the income the more likely the woman is to be abused. Well that is what the National Organization for Women’s web site says.

Sorry, but this is slightly ridiculous but not entirely. For the last ten years, before the economic problems started last year, rape figures have been going up in the US while all other crimes, murder, assault and robbery, have been going down. I would argue that 1) as women feel more confident about their rights, women have had the courage to report rapes that would have normally been kept secret and, 2) men have been taking out their loss of superior status on women. Not loss of economic status but loss of male superiority.

I think the racial is the same now as any time on earth, but because there are more of us and the media can put it in your face in an instant ,it only seems the violence is worse ,not that any violence is good

Eventually, Indian females are much luckier than some either of Austria (did you read of 24 year ordeal there?) or of Russia
